Cartell Write-Off Check
If you are considering buying a used car, get yourself a Cartell Car Check to make sure it’s not a write-off.
Although there is no barrier to buying and selling Category C, Category D, Category S and Category N (categories listed below) write-off vehicles. They do come with a number of complications, most notably being issues around insurance.
There would also be concerns around the safety and reliability of the written off vehicle, ideally there should be an engineers report accompanying to prove the road-worthiness.
Shockingly, previous Cartell users have run a check only to find out that said vehicle was a Category B write-off, which should have been scrapped!
Write-Off Categories:
Category A
The vehicle must be scrapped and no parts or components can be sold other than for scrap.
Category B
The vehicle must not be used again but non-structural and roadworthy parts and components may be recovered for use in other vehicles.
Category C
The vehicle is repairable but the parts and labour would exceed the value of the car.
Category D
The vehicle is economically repairable. Additional factors involved cause the insurer to declare the vehicle a write off. For example, the replacement car hire might be too costly.
Category S (UK Classification)
The vehicle has sustained damage to the structural frame or chassis but is repairable. The insurer has made the decision not to repair it.
Category N (UK Classification)
The vehicle is repairable. It has not sustained damage to the structural frame or chassis but the insurer has decided against repairing the vehicle as it is not economically viable.
